What's the best way to educate myself about fashion?

I'm a singer-songwriter and I've never really been that much into fashion. I'm a big fan of Bob Dylan, though, and I often hear him dropping names of clothing items, materials, patterns, accessories, and whatnot. To give you a few examples:

1. Leopard skin pillbox hat

2. Boots of Spanish leather

3. With your sheets like metal and your belt like lace

4. The man in the COONSKIN CAP
By the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten

And I want to know both men's and women's fashion. And I'm REALLY ignorant (like I couldn't tell you what cashmere looks or feels like off the top of my head, and I had to look up "pillbox hat" to see what that looked like, etc).

I need to start at the very beginning. Where ever that is!

Is there any way I can educate myself on this type of stuff? And I'm hoping for something more convenient than just buying a buttload of fashion magazines or a buttload of clothes (plus, I don't think many modern fashion magazines would have given me any foreknowledge of the visage of a leopard skin pillbox hat). Plus, I'm fairly poor. Starving artist, haha. :D

Why do preps have such a problem with scene kids?

Okay, so I've noticed that a ton of people seem to have problems with scene kids, preps in particular. What's your problem with them? I don't see the big deal. Just like you, they're obviously dressing the way they want to. I'm not scene, but I like to tease my hair and shit like that. And I like some of the music. And, by the way, sometimes people that dress like scene kids do it because they like it. Have you ever thought of that? Maybe they like hardcore and crunkcore. And maybe they like their colorful hair and insane makeup. What's the big deal? Preps dress the way they want. And if you say that scene kids are ragging on you all the time, I'm here to say that the scene kids I know don't rag on the preps unless they're being b!tches to them. Most of the time what they're ragging on is the clothes preps wear. And, to be honest, from what I've seen, scene kids are usually more unique than preps for the following reasons:
1. Most preps come in one or two different forms, whereas scene kids can look dramatically different depending on their taste in music, which, by the way, inspires everything from the clothes and accessories they wear to their hair.
2. About 97% of preps only listen to what's immediately provided on the Top 40 Hit Radio. There are the rare gems that like to be adventurous, but they're sadly rare. Scene kids' music tastes range from screamo, techno, classic rock, punk, pop-punk, emo, indie, post-hardcore, new wave, grunge, pop '80s, crunkcore, rapcore, and more. Most of them stick to three or four of the listed and base their look on that.
3. Unlike preps, scene kids aren't afraid to stick out. Cause lets face it, scene kids definitely stick out in a crowd, and preps just blend in.

So, why do you preps hate people for being more unique than you? It confuses me. Big deal, they dress differently and like "scary" music. Doesn't mean that you can't be friends with them. I have a semi-scene style. I don't label myself, but a lot of people say I look like a scene kid and I have a ton of prep friends. I have video game nerd friends, hardcore rap fan friends, prep friends, emo friends, goth friends, etc. So what's the big deal with preps hating scene kids so much?
@Stefano There are attention whores in both groups, yes, but that doesn't mean that everyone in those stereotypes is one. I've known some really snotty and annoying kids that are/were both preppy and scene and some really nice ones of both. I do have to say that I've met more nice, cool scene kids though.
@Walter I'm not scene. I'm just recording my observations. Sure, I don't really like any aspect of the prep style but I don't think I said anything really derrogatory. I just said what I've observed.

Okay, I'd like to say that I did not, in any way, insult the prep style. I just said that, according to my observations, there's not much diversity in preps' attire and music taste. Also, I've noticed that preps kind of blend in while scene kids stick out. I didn't say "OMG I HATE THOSE PREPPY BITCHES!" or anything like that. I said that I didn't see much uniqueness in preps. There's a thin line between expressing your opinion and being a b!tch about it. I think I'm saying it in quite a nice/calm way. It's not like I said that they all look the same. I made it nicer.

@Oi! SHARP Oi! What if a kid looks and acts like a scene kid but doesn't consider themself scene (not only doesn't call themself scene but doesn't consider themself scene)? And I have certain scene people that I hate and certain preps that I hate but I don't hate all of either group. You don't have to be so close-minded and hating everything in and about certain styles. Just because someone dresses "scene" doesn't mean they're a poser. I apparently dress like a scene kid, but I don't label myself nor do I consider myself scene. I just pick clothes I like. Does that make me a poser or a trendy bitch?
And I say "apparently" because I mean that people always say I look scene.

The New Xbox + Kinect.. How Is It?

I have the old one, and I'm just wondering if the new Xbox and Kinect is all it's cracked up to be.

It's really cheap. I paid $400 for my Xbox, and probably about $300-400 more in accessories (Not including games), but I bought the Wireless Adapter which is now built in, wow. Lol!

Let me know if you own it or if you've used it. Do the sensors on the Kinect work well? I hate my Wii, and it can't detect motion for it's life.
